This is what's been happening with our church family and our mission of multiplying disciples in Waxahachie over the past month.
Before I fill you in on the details of what's been going on, let me tell you something about who we are. That will provide you with some context for why we're excited about the last month.
"What does Soma mean?"
Some of you have probably been wondering why we are called Soma —I'm growing quite fond of answering this question. So let me tell you! Soma is the Greek word that you find translated as Body in the New Testament. And we look to Ephesians 4, where the Church is described as the Soma (or Body) of Christ, as our charter for ministry.
“And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,” —Ephesians 4:11–15 ESV
We don't believe that the Father has merely saved us from death and sin by uniting us to Jesus —in his life, death and resurrection— but we also understand that he is presently and actively saving us from the seduction of sin through the power of his Spirit —in great measure by uniting us together with other members of his Spirit-empowered Body. It is within the context of this united identity that the Body matures and grows up in every way, into Christ; providing mutual care and equipping itself for the continued work of Jesus' disciple-making ministry.
Easter on Waxahachie's Eastside
Something beautiful happened the week before Easter in our backyard. One of our gracious donors gave us a special gift of $1,000 —but not without a string attached. He instructed us to take that $1000, to read Deuteronomy 14:22-29, and apply God's command to Israel to our neighborhood. It was fantastic. I'll not bother explaining to you everything that we did —you can click here to learn more— but I will tell you that it was an opportunity to serve our neighbors and celebrate God's overwhelming goodness with people who'd likely never come to one of our services. Not only were we able to meet new friends and feed 50+ people, but we were also able to bless four families in a very special way — read about how one of those families responded here. It was amazing. Not simply because of the turnout or even for the joy we experienced in blessing our neighbors, but because I got to see Jesus' Body, his Soma in Waxahachie, working together in unity to make Jesus' name more famous in this city.
Here's how you can partner with us:
1) Pray that God would continue sending us financial support. With all things remaining the same my full time salary will eat up our savings within the year.
2) We want new disciples and more like minded, gospel-saturated, mission oriented believers to partner with us. Pray that God would give us evangelistic and discipleship opportunities. And pray that those people will mature into disciple-multiplying leaders within our church family.
3) We need a Sunday morning venue for our worship gatherings. We have a fantastic spot now but we’re forced to meet on Sunday nights and presently that seems to be working against us. Please, pray that God provides us space.
